MEM Students Attend SWE Conference in Baltimore
The 2008 Society for Women Engineers national conference was held in Baltimore, Maryland from November 5-8. The conference gives collegiate and professional members the opportunity to network with each other and industry leaders. A variety of presentations were offered with topics ranging from Fitting Fitness with Business Travel to How to Patent a Technology Idea. In addition to the workshops, the conference included a career fair with over 260 exhibitors.
MEM students Julie Goral and Kellina Andersen attended the event. At the career fair they informed attendees about the Master of Engineering and Management Program at Case Western Reserve University. Goral commented, "It is an open social environment to learn about what other women in engineering are involved in as well as offer your own experiences and advice." Kellina added, " It was great to have the chance to tell other young engineers about the MEM program as well as expose companies to the program's uniqueness."
Case Alum Emphasizes Value Propositions in MEM Product Design Class
October 29, 2008
Kevin O'Brien, Case Macromolecular Science and Engineering alum (B.S., Ph.D.) and Director of Innovation at SRI International, addressed MEM students in their Product and Process Design, Development and Delivery course on the importance of developing compelling value propositions for companies, customers, and investors. He built upon Curtis Carlson's Oct. 1 Deioma Lecture and discussed SRI's Five Disciplines of Innovation and 'NABC' (Need, Approach, Benefits/cost, Competition) analysis. Kevin also offered two case studies from his career for discussion, and MEM teams worked through the cases and delivered brief presentations. Kevin noted that he conducts similar workshops around world for representatives from industries and governments, and he was very impressed with our MEM students' work: "We have conducted innovation programs throughout the world. In that context, I was extremely impressed by the performance of the MEM students. The students had less time for analysis than many of the groups involved in these programs, yet delivered a high quality product and demonstrated a keen sense for building customer value." MEM teams will use lessons from Kevin's discussions in their projects during this academic year. Project clients include Baxter Healthcare, DuPont, Desktop Factory, Plastipak, Lubrizol, Mobile Discovery, and GE Lighting.
